For years my family used to take vacations to Maine. They loved the cool sea air and the history of the surrounding towns and locals. Even though I was young I could still appreciate the beauty of the coastline, the nautical feel of the towns, and the great seafood that seemed to be on every corner. I think the thing that I appreciated most of all was the time I got to spend with my family, because that is the true essence of a vacation; getting to spend quality time with the people you care about.
For us, our family vacation destinations were always places that we could really enjoy as a family. We didn't want to go somewhere that was going to have so many distractions that we wouldn't be able to enjoy each other's company, so we tended to go places that were a bit quieter and more reserved and ultimately I'm glad we did. The great thing about Maine was that the ocean seemed to be everywhere at once. The sheer majesty and beauty of it really made the place have a magical feel. I think that my father took an especial appreciation for Maine since he had been in the Navy and always wanted to spend time on the ocean. Now I think Maine holds a good deal of charm for my parents because it was the place that we spend so much quality time together.

Another great aspect of or family vacations to Maine was the proximity of several other nearby attractions. There were the beautiful harbor towns in New Hampshire that were filled with history. There was also the benefit of shopping with no sales tax in New Hampshire, an experience that I still cannot wrap my mind around; "What do you mean it's 99 cents? Shouldn't this be $1.07 or something?" I think for my parents the tax-free experience was itself a reason to leave home! We went fishing, we went to the scenic lighthouses that lined the coast, and we ate some really good food to boot. This is the whole point of a family vacation: To come away with great memories of great places and the people you care about. For my family that meant Maine, for your family maybe you already have a special place, but if you don't you should consider talking to a travel agent and finding a special place that your family can call their home away from home.
